There’s a new Steiner critical book out in German. It’s written by Irene Wagner and is entitled ‘Rudolf Steiners langer Schatten’. Hpd has an interview with Wagner which seems not to have gone down well with anthroposophists, judging by some reactions I’ve seen. She makes anthroposophists look slightly dangerous but many of the things she says (in the interview, I’m unfamiliar with the book) are not untrue. She says, for example:
‘Es gibt kein Unterrichtsfach Anthroposophie, das heißt aber noch lange nicht, dass sie keine Rolle spielt; im Gegenteil, und das sagen sogar Anthroposophen: ohne Anthroposophie keine Waldorfschule. Das heißt im Umkehrschluss keine Waldorfschule ohne Anthroposophie. Das äußert sich ganz konkret in der Zuordnung der Schüler zu den vier Temperamenttypen, an der Vermittlung des Unterrichtsstoffs in Form von Märchen, Sagen und Bibelgeschichten in den ersten acht Schuljahren und generell in der gefühlsmäßigen Herangehensweise.’
She also talks about the problematic side of the 7-year periods that play a significant part in ‘determining’ what a child is supposed to be developmentally ready for.
Interestingly, she says that what made here look closer at the topic was a letter writing campaign by anthroposophists…
